Najib’s dream team can be PR's nightmare

Prime Minister and Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Najib Razak's criteria for "best candidate" can spell a tough election for Pakatan Rakyat (PR) if the dream team becomes a reality.
UCSI Economics and Policy Studies lecturer Dr Ong Kian Ming said if Najib can deliver quality and qualified candidates who are credible, clean, and social media savvy, the "Opposition will have a formidable task in denying BN a two-thirds majority".
He said Najib has thrown a strong challenge to himself and BN, and these high standards are something Pakatan should aspire to emulate.
Ong was responding to The Malay Mail's front-page report last Friday, headlined "Najib's Choice", where the BN chairman has rejected up to 50 per cent of the original candidates.
He also voiced his doubts that BN candidates could fulfill all these criteria, in particular, the requirements to be social media savvy, as rural area candidates do not need such tools to engage with their constituents.
Ong said if PR rises up to Najib's challenge, they would be in a better position to field candidates of that calibre due to "less baggage".
UKM Institute of Ethnic Studies Principal Research Fellow Datuk Dr Denison Jayasooria said the tough stand for potential candidates is the way forward for the 13th general election (GE 13).
